Tom Wormald – Coach
I’ve always had a huge interest in sport and I have tried to play and watch as much of it as possible! When I was younger, I used to swim at the local sports centre in Holmfirth, I did karate, played cricket, football and pretty much any sport I could do, as I’ve always loved being active and social. I still play rugby and tennis whenever I have the time too.
As an 18 year old, when I’m not coaching at Rugger Ratz, I’m in my second year at college studying BTEC Sport, ICT BTEC and A-Level Business Studies. I’ve always wanted a career in sport and I’ve really enjoyed the coaching aspect of my Sport Diploma. I’ve coached at Thongsbridge Tennis Club for a season, but I’ve realised I’m much more interested in coaching rugby.
My rugby background
I started playing rugby at Lockwood Park (Huddersfield Rugby Union) at the age of 4, where I learned all of the basic ball skills and the rules of rugby. I then played rugby league at Holmfirth High School, which is how I became interested in playing at Underbank Rangers Rugby League Club. I played for Underbank for several years starting from the U14s up to the U17s, where I played pretty much any role I got asked to play, from full-back to loose-forward.
These were the best times of my life, playing with a team full of good mates and competing at a good standard.
The highlight of my career at Underbank Rangers was winning the double at the U16s, where we won the league and defeated East Leeds in the Continuation Cup Final at the Big Fellas Stadium, after being 20-0 down with 20 minutes to go. Also, having a training session with Tony Smith was pretty special too.
I recently played Rugby Union with Cleckheaton 3rds and am keen to play Open Age with Underbank.
I’ve always been a huge rugby union fan, and I get excited about watching England play. I watch a lot of Premiership rugby, especially Leicester Tigers. I’ve also had a few season tickets with the Huddersfield Giants and Huddersfield Town but I started struggling to go to many of the matches due to my other work commitments. I’m very enthusiastic about sport and I’m driven to keep fit and hopefully make a career from my passion for coaching sport.
Coaching for Rugger Ratz
Coaching at Rugger Ratz combines my love of rugby with my coaching ambition, and I couldn’t ask for a better start. I’d like to encourage the Rugger Ratz kids to start active and stay that way; sport delivers so much more than physical fitness – they’ll develop social skills and mental strength that will stay with them throughout their lives.
